When I completed my medical training at Leiden University, The Netherlands, I moved to the United Kingdom. Having passed my basic surgical exams I became a knee research fellow, analysing over 500 patients who had undergone knee replacement surgery. I was appointed to the West Midlands Orthopaedic rotation, where I received an excellent training. In addition to the clinical work I participated in research, published scientific papers, was treasurer of the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association and was a member of the editorial panel of a surgical journal for trainees.

In the final year of training I was awarded a Travel Fellowship by the British Association for Surgery of the Knee, and visited 6 top knee surgeons in the United Kingdom and mainland Europe.

I have been working as a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon in Bury St Edmunds since September 2003. I participate in a trauma rota, dealing with patients with broken bones, acute infections and other emergencies. My main field of interest is knee surgery, in particular the treatment of knee cartilage disorders in patients of any age. This includes children in whom a piece of cartilage has  broken off, sports injuries, torn cartilages using keyhole surgery (arthroscopy), dealing with isolated cartilage defects as a result of trauma (microfracture), and the treatment of arthritis with realignment operations (osteotomy) and knee replacement surgery (unicompartmental {partial}, total and revision). I also perform hip replacements, ankle arthroscopy and forefoot procedures.

I have presented the results of my unicompartmental knee replacements at European knee meetings and have been a faculty member at national and international knee conferences, lecturing on osteotomies and unicompartmental knee replacement surgery.

I am the founder of a local sports injury clinic, Bury Sports Medicine, giving athletes the opportunity to have rapid access to a specialist sports physiotherapist and surgeon.

Outside work I like spending time with my wife Annemarie and children Olivia and Lucas. I enjoy cooking, gardening, golf and skiing.
